Windows and Mirrors

“You use a glass mirror to see your face; you use works of art to see your soul.” – George Bernard Shaw

“Windows and Mirrors” refers, of course, to John Szarkowski’s categories of American Photography since 1960.  He spoke of a divergence between those who view art as a mirror, reflecting themselves in their images, and those who view art as a window, through which one may describe and interpret the world.  I’m thinking that it’s not quite so simple a distinction.  We are always reflecting something of ourselves, whether we know it or not.
